League of Legends gets an “Auto Chess” mode

Teamfight Tactics hits the PBE this week, releases this month

Riot Games has announced that smash-hit MOBA game League of Legends will be entering the Auto Chess space in the form of Teamfight Tactics later this month. Riot describes it as a “round-based strategy game that pits you against seven opponents in a free-for-all race to build a powerful team that fights on your behalf. Your goal: Be the last person standing.”

In detail, the game involves spending gold in the ingame store to build armies that will automatically battle other players’ armies in a hexagonal board (a spin on the Auto Chess grid). The game’s strategy involves buying synergizing champions and placing them accordingly. You can build up armies over time by combining multiple of the same units to create stronger units.

This is a game mode being made directly out of love for Dota Auto Chess by the League of Legends team and it’s getting the works as a “Real Grown up Game Mode” according to their announcement. This means you can expect metagame changes and ranked queues to come in a later patch.

Additionally, the Little Legends will be a cosmetic avatar used in the Teamfight Tactics mode en lieu of champion skins and will be available as cosmetic follower minions in the ARAM map, Howling Abyss.

You will be able to pick one for free and get any other minion after that for 750 RP. They will also have upgrades in their cosmetic appearances with what sounds like a lootbox mechanic called Rare LL Eggs, for 490 RP.

Expect this game mode and the cosmetic options to launch during patch 9.13, June 25.
